The Nationals Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty is calling on Lowan residents to nominate outstanding seniors who make a remarkable difference to their communities for the 2011 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.
“Community members, service organisations and local councils are invited to nominate seniors for an award to honour their selfless contribution to the community,” Mr Delahunty said.
“Victorian Senior of the Year Awards give us an opportunity to recognise the tireless volunteer services of older people across Victoria,” Mr Delahunty said.
“In the Lowan electorate there is a strong community spirit, with volunteers banding together to help people, and our seniors play a big part in making our communities great places to live,” Mr Delahunty said.
To be eligible for an award, nominees must be over 60 years of age, an Australian citizen, a resident of Victoria and have made an exceptional contribution to their community.
There five award categories including the Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year presented for an outstanding contribution to the local community and Victoria; Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria Senior Achiever Awards for a significant contribution to their local community and Victoria; Promotion of Multiculturalism Award for making a significant contribution to promoting the benefits of cultural diversity in their local community or to the broader community of Victoria; Healthy and Active Living Award for helping to create active and healthy communities through their community involvement and as a role model; and Veteran Community Award for making an exceptional contribution to the veteran community.
All nominees are also eligible for the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria Senior Achiever Awards. These awards celebrate seniors whose talents, achievements and contributions have significantly benefited their communities.
